- PnP doesn't really apply to external modems. The advantage of
- PnP with modems is that the computer can reconfigure the modems COM port
- and IRQ without having to set any jumpers or DIP switches. This does not
- apply to external modems, only to the serial ports or cards you connect
- them to. (and Microsoft says they have to not hang up if you type ATDT;,
- then ATDT#, where # is the number you're dialing, to get the PnP stamp).
- The regular external will do that dialing thing with the flashROM that
- came with the PnP internal or newer.
-
- The external modems for PC and Mac are actually the same modem, just
- shipped with a different serial cable and bundled software - what could
- be more "Plug and Play" than a Mac??

-
- Yes, we're using the Supra externals at an ISP here and they are great
- modems.

-
- It doesn't yet support 31.2K or 33.6K speeds. This is supposed to happen
- when ITU-T makes v.34bis (v.34+) an official specification. Unfortunately,
- from what I've read here, this won't be a flash ROM upgrade - you'll have
- to send the modem back to be upgraded, and possibly pay a fee. Also, with
- most phone lines, this doesn't really matter - a lot can't get 28.8 most
- of the time.
